Reference Works in Biblical Studies

The following overview is far from complete. It simply reflects my conviction that a Bible dictionary, a history of the New Testament (NT) and one of the Old Testament (OT) should not be missing on any Christian bookshelf. Having these, a theology of the NT and an introduction to the OT and the NT are the next thing to get.

There are many different Bible dictionaries available in English. Good and affordable are for instance the New Bible Dictionary (InterVarsity/Tyndale) and the five-volume Zondervan Pictorial Encyclopedia of the Bible (Zondervan, 1975).

It is incredible how much information can be packed in one volume. F.F. Bruce will greatly add to your understanding of the NT.
